Slap Boxing Harmony: The Art of Paramilitary Playfulness

Slap boxing is well known in the sport of boxing and as the name suggests, it is a variation of boxing with the fist kept open to “slap” the opponent. The result is a more symmetrical form of fighting with slaps that inflict pain but do not cause massive damage compared to closed fists.

Smack boxing history

The exact roots of the sport are unknown – the art of quasi-fighting may have begun as early as its ancestors in the boxing practiced by the Sumerians. However, it is widely believed that they evolved a little later when boxing gloves were included in the sport. Slap boxing can be a form of adaptive boxing when players do not wear gloves or protective gear to use on the hands.

As a result, slapping boxing is often practiced informally. You’ll find this being played in the gym, garage, or practically anywhere you have enough space.

Slap boxing as a sport

Technically not recognized as a “sport”, there is no shortage of slapping boxers who practice this semi-martial art. It’s really not surprising considering how similar it is to boxing. Slap boxers may use the same footwork, attacks, stance, and techniques as athletic boxers with only some modifications because the deliveries of slaps are different from straight punches.

Slap boxing is often practiced as part of an athletic boxer’s training, as well as other martial arts. It can also be played for fun and as a way to maintain or lose weight. Since the games are played informally, there are no set rules associated with the activity. In most cases, sparring regulations differ from one fight club to another. Called “ghetto game”, this practice is also an accepted form of “greeting” between children and may be seen as a way of showing affection between men and boys. In such cases, the goal is not to win but to slap and slap at least once, to show your opponent how strong you are. It is often noted that the boxers who practice it have better hand-eye coordination and agility with the punches.

When used as a form of self-defense, you will find that slapping boxing works very well. Like boxing, it teaches the practitioner how to wiggle, weave, defend and attack if necessary. Although slaps are considered less destructive than punches, they can still cause pain to the opponent, and in most cases leave him stunned for a few seconds.

Slap boxing in pop culture

Many popular personalities have directly or indirectly admitted slapping participation in boxing. In particular, rappers like Eminem, Jay-Z, and Brother Ali have released songs with references to the quasi-martial art.
